This course provides guidelines and tips for safe Internet use, focusing on “the real world.” Students will learn basic concepts and terminology regarding the “ethical” use of the Internet, and will be provided with strategies and tips for safer online use in the “real world.” There are a number of basic topics that will be covered in this course: common activities on the Internet, e-mail and messaging, online communication, e-commerce, and managing and maintaining a website. This course also provides students with strategies and tips for safe Internet use.
Difficulty:
This is a “beginner’s” course, so even though a previous “Internet use” course may be required, most students will not need previous experience. However, it is recommended that students do have some basic skills, such as having access to the World Wide Web (WWW). Students will also have access to the Internet from their home, and will be required to access it from their school network.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Review a list of activities which can be performed online
- Discuss common online activities
- Understand ethical and unsafe online use
- Understand basic online safety issues
- Understand a variety of strategies for safe Internet use
- Understand the pros and cons of online communication, e-commerce, and managing and maintaining a website
- Understand the relationship between the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW)
Eligibility:
This course is available to all students enrolled in the State University of New York at Fredonia. All students can complete this course, but as a University of New York school, Fredonia is not required to offer all courses through the University.

This course will allow them to focus on their grades, and do the required work for their application process. Students will have to explain why they would be an asset to any institution and describe their experiences with groups that they have already encountered. They will also be required to write a series of essays that will require them to analyze and outline the research they have done, as well as discuss their progress and experiences.
